The James City Bruton Volunteer Fire Department is located in Toano, Virginia in historic James City County. Founded in 1948, the JCBVFD covers the largest response area of all five James City County fire stations. This area spans the northwestern portion of James City County and is home to several upscale residential developments, fast-growing commercial areas, large industrial facilities, a major interstate highway as well as the York and Chickahominy Rivers.
To ensure adequate response readiness over such a diverse and large area, the Department maintains a fleet of two class-A pumpers, a squad truck equipped with a full compliment of heavy rescue equipment, a 75-foot ladder mid-mount aerial ladder, a 3500 gallon capacity tanker, two brush units as well as a water rescue vehicle and two boats.
The volunteers of the James City Bruton Volunteer Fire Department respond to a wide variety of emergency incidents including fires, vehicle accidents, technical rescues, maritime emergencies, HAZMAT incidents and emergency medical events. Typically, these incidents total nearly 1500 annually.
The JCBVFD volunteers are equipped to provide emergency response 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our volunteers boast a large diversity of backgrounds including, professional firefighters, high school and college students, business owners, engineers and medical professionals. The volunteers are committed to maintaining a high level of training, and in 2008 alone, obtained more than 175 state fire and EMS certifications as a department.
The James City Bruton Volunteer Fire Department is also staffed with career staff provided by the James City County Fire Department 24 hours a day, and also maintains extensive mutual aid agreements with surrounding jurisdictions including York County, New Kent County and the City of Williamsburg.
While the primary mission of the JCBVFD is to provide emergency fire and EMS response to the residents and visitors of the area, our department is also proud to serve as an active member of the community in non-emergency situations as well.
In 2009, the James City Bruton Farmer's Market was opened, providing local produce vendors and craftsman a location to sell their wares. The farmer's market also provides fundraising opportunities to the Department. Members of the JCBVFD are also involved in several service projects throughout the year, assisting other local non-profit agencies and church groups.
The JCBVFD is also glad to assist local residents with home smoke detector checks and installations as well as fire prevention education for children and small groups. The James City Bruton Volunteer Fire Department has been proudly serving the citizens of upper James City County for over sixty years, and is excited to do so for years to come. The James City Bruton Volunteer Fire Department is a 503(c)(3) non-profit organization recognized by the federal government and is glad to accept donations in order to maintain our response readiness.
